Florence, June 23, 2022 – After a two-year hiatus due to pandemic restrictions, this year we celebrate the feast of St. John Battista, patron saint of Florence. There is, therefore, a great expectation in the city for the different initiatives dedicated to tradition that in any case will be organized in accordance with current health regulations. Here is the program of the June 24.
The historical procession
At 8.30 will begin Procession of the Diputación with the Historical Parade of the Florentine Republic, for the delivery of the Cross of San Giovanni to the Mayor of Florence and the best wishes of San Giovanni from the Loggia del Bigallo, via Calzaiuoli to the Palazzo Vecchio. At 9.30 on the parade with the Gonfalone of Florence and the Palazzo Family, accompanied by the Historical Parade of the Florentine Republic; at 10 a.m., the traditional one Candle offering by the municipal administration and the Society of San Giovanni Battista in the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore and celebration of Holy Mass in honor of the Patron

The final of historic Florentine football

The ‘fires’ of San Giovanni
The day ends with the most anticipated event for all citizens, a tradition that has lasted more than ninety years: at 10 pm from Piazzale Michelangelo the historian fireworks show or, called Florentine, the “fochi” of S. Giovanniabout fifty minutes long, with a magic of lights thanks to the enhancing fires, with lilies, butterflies and a new weeping willow. The show will be preceded by an animation directed by Alessandro Masti and a concert by the Fanfare of the School of Marshals and Brigades of the Carabinieri of Florence.
The Florentine towers, gates and fortresses will reopen from June 24
Towers, gates and fortresses: from June 24, on the occasion of the feast of St. John the Baptist, the Tower of San Niccolò reopens to the public, queen of the Florentine towers. But that’s not all, the other fortifications in the city can also be visited, from Fort Belvedere (from 19) a Bastion of San Giorgio (from June 25), of Porta Romana (from July 2) until Fortress from Basso (as of July 7) and Coin Tower (from July 9). The coronation of the Marzocco
Also in the framework of the celebrations by the patron saint of the city of Florence, on Sunday 19 June the Society of San Giovanni Battista organized, with the Municipality of Florence and the master goldsmith Paolo Penko, the historic Coronation of the Marzocco. This ceremony will be followed June 26 from a second, two days after the patron saint’s feast, this time for the deposition of the crown.
