STUTTGART – New engine, new transmission, new all-wheel drive system: thanks to a complete technological update, Mercedes-Benz allows the Sprinter, the brand’s icon in the segment of large vans, to offer maximum driving comfort in any terrain. At the heart of the upgrade is the high-performance and efficient 2.0 OM 654 diesel engine, already used in the brand’s passenger cars. The four-cylinder power unit is available on request in four power classes. From the range of cars of the brand with the star, the Sprinter also incorporates the 9G-Tronic automatic transmission in all its variants, integrating the 6-speed manual gearbox. The third technical innovation is a new all-wheel drive with Torque-on-demand system in the Sprinter 4ž4, which will replace the current system. To these improvements in driving comfort, there is also an advantage in terms of ergonomics and safety thanks to the Speed Delivery Door system.

“The last phase of evolution of the Sprinter presents the greatest driving comfort of cars ever thanks to a wide technological update – said Ulf Zillig, development director of Mercedes-Benz Vans – And not only on highways, rural roads or urban traffic: also on roads unpaved, the Sprinter will soon offer a particularly relaxed driving experience and, therefore, greater safety, once again realizing what has always characterized the series: a further redefinition of the standards for the large van segment. ” . While the powerful four-cylinder OM 654 diesel was previously only available to the Sprinter as a rear-wheel drive van and chassis, Mercedes-Benz now offers the power unit as the only combustion engine for all versions, including the new all-wheel drive. drive variant. Classified according to the Euro VI-E and Euro 6d exhaust emission standards, the OM 654 can be ordered -according to the selected traction and body variant- in four power classes with 114 hp, 150 hp, 170 hp and 190 hp. The four-cylinder derived from the Mercedes-Benz passenger car industry has even better acoustic and vibrational comfort compared to its predecessor. The combination of the Sprinter’s state-of-the-art 2-liter diesel engine with the comfortable 9G-Tronic automatic transmission has also been pulled from Mercedes-Benz’s current range of passenger cars.

The latter replaces the previous 7G-Tronic Plus. Along with the strong overdrive features, its nine gears keep the engine speed low in almost all driving situations, with considerable savings in fuel consumption and a further reduction in vibration and noise. Optimized hydraulic elements also allow for quick and imperceptible gear changes, virtually without interruption of traction power. The “Drive Select” system and the steering wheel paddles allow the driver to intervene manually to change gears. Another plus: Despite two additional gears, the 9G-Tronic automatic transmission requires the same reduced installation space as its 7G-Tronic Plus predecessor. The 6-speed manual transmission is still available in the range. In addition to the advantages in driving comfort, from this month the Sprinter will also offer an additional advantage in terms of ergonomics and safety, thanks to the innovative sliding door system “Speed Delivery Door” which will be available from the factory. It is a double sensor swing door next to the passenger, controlled by sensors, which replaces, on request, the side sliding door of the cargo compartment.
