Jeep Grand Cherokee, 4xe Hybrid Technologies – Under the Lens

Jeep Grand Cherokee, all the secrets of the hybrid version 4x 2.0 turbo gasoline engine, two electric units and 17 kWh battery In addition to the sleek body – aerodynamic, modern and of unquestionably premium quality – the new Jeep Grand Cherokee has stood out for a long time. list of technological innovations, starting with the 4xe plug-in hybrid unit.
This propulsion system is based on a 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder turbo gasoline engine belonging to the Stellantis Group’s global average engine family, combined with electric units that also provide torque with automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.
This advanced direct-injection gasoline engine features a low-inertia Twin Scroll turbocharger mounted directly on the cylinder head. Efficiency is improved by the use of power steering and an electrically operated air conditioning compressor. The hybrid system includes a first water-cooled high-voltage generator motor that is placed on the front of the engine, replacing the traditional alternator.
It is connected via a sturdy belt to the crankshaft pulley and, in addition to powering the combustion engine and managing the operation of the start-stop system, at the same time generates the electrical energy to be transported to the battery.
A second larger engine generator is placed at the front of the gearbox and replaces the traditional automatic transmission torque converter. Two clutches manage the power and torque offered by the electric unit and the gasoline engine. the first is between the two units: when it is open it only allows you to travel in fully electric mode as there is no mechanical connection between the electric motor and the thermal one.
When closed, however, the 2.0-liter heat engine and electric unit combine and provide torque to the automatic transmission. A second variable clutch is mounted behind the electric motor and manages the interaction with the transmission for the benefit of driving and efficiency.
The Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe is equipped with a 400 volt, 17 kWh battery. It is located together with the control devices at the bottom of the vehicle, packed under the ground and secured thanks to a series of protection plates. The battery pack has dedicated heating and cooling circuits, which allow you to keep the battery at optimum temperatures to benefit from performance. The system includes a cooling unit that uses the cooling fluid from the Grand Cherokee’s air conditioning system to reduce the temperature when needed.
The Grand Cherokee 4xe hybrid system includes an integrated dual charging module (IDCM), which combines a battery charging system and a DC / DC converter into a single unit that is more compact than the two separate components.
The hybrid system also includes a small power inverter (PIM). They are housed under the frame and protected from damage by steel plates. Please note that all high voltage electronic components and systems are sealed and waterproof, so much so that the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe with the “Trail Rated” badge has a wading capacity of 61 cm.
The charging plug is protected by a lid with pressure opening and closing system, has a colored LED indicator that indicates its operation and is located on the left side of the bumper, allowing you to approach the column ‘from the nose’ to simplify the top. -up upload operations. The driver of the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe can customize the journey with a hybrid engine according to different needs and the type of route. The system has three operating modes, called E Selec, which can be selected using the corresponding buttons on the board. There is the hybrid position that combines the torque delivered by the electric motor with that of the thermal motor. The propulsion system optimizes the energy produced by the battery and the power generated by the engine to offer the optimal combination in terms of efficiency and performance.
When the selector is in Electric, the motor uses electrical energy and if the battery reaches the minimum charge level (or when the driver requires more torque by pressing the accelerator thoroughly) the eSave heat engine is activated. This mode gives priority to the gasoline engine, saving the battery for later use. Below are the secondary modes of battery saving and battery charging, which can be activated using the hybrid power pages of the Uconnect system.
